David Mayne

David Mayne creates sculpture for homes and gardens as well as large scale architectural interventions in the public realm. Work is in collections through-out the country and small scale steel and wood pieces are in constant demand by leading galleries and contemporary craft centres.
 
David has a lifelong passion for nature and landscape. He currently lives in Holmfirth near areas of stunning woodland and wild and beautiful hills and moorland. The work he creates is a response to this landscape and other wilderness environments he has encountered. Figures or animals are often combined within the work to create a sense of scale and place.
 
“Many of my pieces that contain animals not only define scale.  They are like capturing a memory. When you encounter a deer or a fox in the landscape they are usually just a fleeting sight – blink and they are gone”
 
Various techniques and processes are used to create this work. From high tech – laser cutting , to hand held plasma cutting, angle grinding, hack-sawing and hammering. Primarily it is either mild steel or stainless steel that is used, which is coloured by oxidizing or by polishing. Timber is either planed and waxed or charred to highlight texture – almost like fissures in rock.
